Non-CME Online Lifestyle Medicine Competencies-Based Courses (Certificate)

Lifestyle Medicine Competencies-Based Curriculum developed by the Israel Society of Lifestyle Medicine and advised by the Advisory Group of Lifestyle Medicine Education at Next Generation University (Certificate)

The Overview of the Course:

  • This course teaches about evidenced based lifestyle medicine core competencies through online didactics and peer trainings.

  • The course is intended for primary physicians and other health professionals who are in direct contact with patients in need for lifestyle improvement to prevent, treat and reverse their disease.

  • The course provides the student a chance to practice techniques with locally and globally available peers and mentors.

  • All components of this training (like all NextGenU.org trainings) are free, including registration, learning, testing, and the granting of a certificate of completion.

  • There are 10 modules to complete the course: introduction, nutrition and obesity, physical activity, health behavior change, sleep health, smoking cessation, alcohol abuse, emotional wellness, introduction to sexuality and health, action plan for implementing lifestyle medicine in clinical and personal settings.

  • The competencies were taken from the Lifestyle Medicine Competencies Curriculum Modules for Online Version American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) and the Israeli Society of Lifestyle Medicine of the Association of Family Physicians of the Israel Medical Association.

Introduction to Lifestyle Medicine

Description: This 12 week course will cover lifestyle medicine in a holistic and evidence based manner. Topics include physical activity, nutrition, sleep, stress, positivity, and addictions. The course explores each topic in detail reviewing the latest research and clinical recommendations. Each week, we review the role of collaboration, compassion, and connection while counseling on these health behaviors with patients. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to lifestyle medicine and guides students on how to adopt the healthy behaviors for themselves.

Introduction to Wellness Coaching

Description: This course will facilitate students to gain evidence-based basic knowledge, attitudes, and skills in the field of wellness coaching that can be incorporated into clinical practice in healthcare for health promotion, disease prevention, and therapeutic effect concerning lifestyle-associated diseases and disorders. Thus, this course will introduce students to background and current healthcare environment, foundations in wellness coaching, behavior change and coaching theories, wellness coaching strategies and tools, wellness coaching application, wellness coaching research, and resources. The overarching goal of this course is to demonstrate how wellness coaching principles and strategies apply to change and sustain individual healthy lifestyle factors (e.g. stress management, self-regulation, social relationship, positive psychology, physical activity, nutrition, sleep,). The course includes 12 one hour tele-classroom sessions which combine lecture, audio-visual material, discussion, case studies, assessment, and personal healthy lifestyle change project. Epigenetics and Lifestyle Medicine

Description: This introductory course is organized around the new science of epigenetics with presentations covering the fundamental aspects of epigenomes, their principles, mechanisms, and interactions with environmental contexts including lifestyle components. This course will introduce and discuss relevant theories and extensive research on epigenetics concerning the effects of environment and lifestyle in a comprehensive way. The students will also experience an opportunity to apply epigenetics to lifestyle medicine education, research, and practice. As the literature reports that change of mindset and behavior to support a higher level of health and well-being are challenged and hard to be initiated as well as sustained, this course will provide the learners, especially primary care providers, with an evidence-based in-depth knowledge and insight of the link between epigenomes, environment, and lifestyles (e.g. spiritual lifestyle, mental lifestyle, social lifestyle, physical lifestyle). Furthermore, this course can be used to increase health care providers’ capacity and self-efficacy to facilitate and motivate their patients/clients to choose and sustain health-giving lifestyle during their patient care services as well as their personal health lifestyle practices.
